8 Ways to Show a Blogger You Like Her

by Roo on January 11, 2012

in blogging biz, storytelling

I realize that, as a blogger, this post may seem a little self-serving.  Let’s get past that part together.

*sticks out hand*

Go ahead.  Hold it.  We’re buds.  And I keep foaming hand soap in my bathroom.

I’m fairly new on the blogging scene, and before I was a blogger, I was a blog-reader.  I bookmarked the ones I liked and whispered things like “Shut your face.  She made that?!” while the girls napped.  And, when I finally decided to get my feet wet and start my blog, I emailed a blogger I had been following (I know I told this story before, but pretend like I’m Grandpa and humor me).   I told Angie I thought her blog was super cute, was toying with the idea of starting my own, and did she have any advice?

Angie’s response to a complete and total stranger emailing her can only be described as gracious and enthusiastic and ended with “Just do it, hon!”

She could have easily blown off the email or sent something discouraging (like… STRANGER DANGER STRANGER DANGER DON’T YOU DARE EMAIL ME AGAIN, CRAZY FACE), but her kind email was the little push I needed.  Along with much prodding from Jack.  (I’ve got to give credit where credit is due, y’all.)

A year and a half after Angie from the DC area wrote me back, and here I am.  I blog.  Oh, and?  Angie and I are totally buds now.

In real liiiiiiiiife

With that said, I’ve come up with a list of ways you too can show a blogger you like her.  Or him.  For the sake of brevity, I won’t get caught up in gender-specific pronouns.

So, you like a blogger.  Maybe it’s a mom blogger.  Maybe it’s a foodie blogger.  Maybe it’s a DIY blogger.  Maybe it’s a humor blogger that brightens your days with stick figures and hip hop references.  I don’t know.  Maybe.  I don’t know.  :)  Show her you like her.

1) Subscribe to her blog.
Whether you have it bookmarked or pop in every couple days are so, subscribing to her blog does two things.  It, number one, ensures that you’ll always get her blog posts in your reader or email, and, number two, it increases her subscriber numbers.  Not a huge deal, but if she is a professional blogger, when brands and PR agencies contact her, they’ll ask for her stats.  A higher subscriber count helps her out in the long run.  How do you subscribe?  Bloggers usually have an RSS feed icon in their sidebar or header.  Looks like this:

Mine’s pink.

2) Comment.  Bloggers love comments – even if the feedback is less than stellar.  Did you try out a recipe she posted?  Tell her.  “Made this last week, and it was baaaangin.  My husband loved it, my kids actually ate it, and it was surprisingly easy.  Thanks for sharing!”  And that blogger will be all, “Oh dang.  That’s awesome.  Hmm, if she liked that, maybe I’ll post my recipe for macaroons next week.”  Personally, I try really, really hard to respond to every comment I get.  Sometimes I can’t, especially if it’s a post where the comments are numerous, but I read them all.  I laugh at the funny comments, smile at the nice comments, and carefully weigh any critical comments.  Sometimes a critical comment is totally off-the-wall cray-cray, but sometimes it’s constructive criticism, and I really appreciate that.

3) Love her on Facebook
.  If she has a fan page, go ahead and like it up.  And if she posts something on Facebook, any feedback is always appreciated.  Likes, comments, shares.  So great.

4) Follow on Twitter.
I am on Twitter, and I go through waves where I’m fairly inactive on it, although I’m trying to be better at it.  Not sure how to use Twitter?  I wrote a tutorial on it: How to Use Twitter Like a G.

5) Use those little social media buttons at the bottom (or top) of her posts.
Mine are at the bottom, and they look like this:

The first one is for Facebook.  If you click “like” then that number goes up by one, and Facebook painlessly posts it onto your profile, which suddenly gives us exposure to all of your friends.  The second one is for Twitter.  Clicking on it pulls up a Tweet for you – you can personalize it and your Twitter followers will see it.  The third is for Google +, which maybe only four of us use.  The last is for StumbleUpon.  If you’re a Stumbler, give a girl a stumble if you like the post.  :)

6) Tell your fraaaaaands.
Word of mouth is fantastic.  Via email.  Via message board.  Via text message.  I found out an author I like has a blog I now like.  I texted over the link to my friend.  Boom.  Now she has two fans.  I hesitate to show this next part to you, because I don’t want you to think I’m stalker-y.  I noticed my blog was getting hits from a site in another country.  So, I clicked on the link and found that NiceGirlNotes had been recommended as a blog to read.

I don’t know who you are, but you are wonderful. Can I buy you a latte?

7) Pin her up.
Pinterest is still pretty new, but it has taken off like wiiiiildfire.  If you like a blog post, pin it!  I like to stick a handy Pin It button under images to make it easy.  :)

8) Shoot her an email
, as long as it’s cool if you don’t get an email back right away.  I try to be quick about responding, but more often than not, my inbox count is in the triple digits.  Still, it’s hysterical when I get emails like this:

She has since emailed me in a sober state and recanted the part about Eddie Vedder.  Which is totally fine.  One day I long to be Eddie-Vedder-cool.  Or Will-Smith-cool.  Or Justin-Bieber-heartthrobby.

SHORTY IS AN EENIE-MEENIE-MINEY-MOE LOVERRRRRRRR.

Oh, right.  Where were we?  Not Bieber-ing, if memory serves.

Feel free to add to the list and/or sing along with me.

Kristin B. January 11, 2012 at 12:41 pm

Dearest Lisa,
Sadly, I am not the wicked pod person you are looking for. I am a manic shopper, though. And I am willing to bet a shopping spree you are a New Englander, eh? :-)

Reply

Lisa January 11, 2012 at 12:46 pm

Eep, no! Flattered you thought so, though. As a proud Canadian, I am impressed by your usage of “eh”. :) I also admire the manic shopping… Perhaps YOU should blog!

Reply

Kristin B. January 11, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Well Lisa…Proud Canadian…I am from the Northern high line in MT…so my use of “eh” is an everyday occurrence…that the people in the South (where I now reside) do not get. And also they don’t understand that MT (the FOURTH largest state) is not in Canada.

Reply

Roo January 11, 2012 at 1:38 pm

Totally, Kristin! If you lived in CT, I’d shop with you any day. :)

Right? Each one is like getting a high five and a butt slap. Maybe minus the butt slap.

Reply

Steph January 11, 2012 at 8:47 pm

We call the butt slaps a “good job” here. Can’t do one without saying it. :)

Reply

Rachel January 11, 2012 at 9:13 pm

But I LOVE the butt slap! No “good job” necessary!
And on a side note, I feel a little stalker’ific cause I’ve never commented before until now. Sorry Roo! I really do love your blog!

Roo January 12, 2012 at 6:25 am

Hi Rachel! Thanks for saying hiiiii. :)

Chelle January 11, 2012 at 10:56 am

Totally love your blog. It’s one that I put in my feed after one post because I wanted to be your friend in a non-stalker way. And because you have awesome taste in decorating.

I’m a no niche blogger too and all of your advice in your post is spot on.

Reply

Roo January 11, 2012 at 1:44 pm

Aww, thanks, Chelle! And I love when you comment on FB!

Omg you just quoted me. Yes, you can buy me a latte. Weddingbells, right? Santanico, right here. Unbelievable.

Now, not so off topic – that same thread is why I now follow Crappy Pictures (http://crappypictures.typepad.com/). Word of mouth is huuuuge!

Reply

And despite how many emails you receive, and how many comments your blog gets, I love that you take time to respond when necessary. Even to the comments. That shows that you like your readers just as much as we like you!

And then it makes us like you even more. :)

I try to, Liz, I doooo. I need you to smack me around a little if I start slacking though. :)

I’m with Chelle– I was hooked after just 1 post (which was a guest post on some crafty blog I read)… I read that post, then stalked your blog reading past posts for like a hundred hours and subscribed. It’s been a while, but if I recall, it was the Ballers of History that did it. I’m much better at lurking than commenting, but I’d like to say THANK YOU for brightening my mornings :)

You nailed it. And a girl who knows Eddie Vedder can’t be wrong anyway. Comments are what bloggers want to wake up to in the morning, this little bit of “bleeding heck, somebody out there READS my brain farts, how cool is that?” And I have made friends with a few lovely bloggers out there on FB, more than just saying “hi” on their walls. Through games we play or pictures we share- it’s nice to know that it’s more than just pixels. Great post, lass!

Reply

Roo January 11, 2012 at 9:59 pm

Thanks so much, Steff! :) I haven’t been called “lass” yet this week, so thanks for that, too. ;)

So it’s like, okay, if I just email you the random musings of my mind? Now that I know that’s okay, it’s happening all the time. I always think that bloggers just want to get emails that pertain to their post or what they blog about or something. Thanks for correcting me, boo!

Reply

Roo January 17, 2012 at 11:27 am

Wait, can I publish them? Make them a part of a series? Put them on my refrigerator? Rembot’s artwork is getting a little cocky, and I’d like to take it down a peg or two.

Reply

Caryn January 17, 2012 at 11:43 am

Yes, yes, and yes. I hate when 3 year olds get too cocky with their art…sometimes they just need a 23 year old to bring them back down and give them a taste of harsh reality.

I think this is a good time to share a text I sent my BFF back in October: “Do yourself a favor and check out a blog called Nice Girl Notes. You can also add her on Facebook. You will laugh every day. We want to hang out with this chick, I’m telling you.”

Yours is the only blog I subscribe to and it makes me LOL every time I read it! Being a forty-something mom of four kids, ages 18, 16, 8, and 7, I like to think reading your blog keeps me vaguely cool with the teens (I now like to refer to myself as a “baller” and I’m trying to work “oh my dang” into my vernacular) and gives me fun ideas for my little ones.

Thanks!

Reply

Roo January 17, 2012 at 1:16 pm

Yayyyyyyyyyy thanks for texting! I’m sure your kids think you’re awesome. :)

Reply

Alexandra January 12, 2012 at 12:37 pm

These are great tips, because as bloggers, we can take a lot for granted.

Just b/c we “think” a blogger is great doesn’t mean she knows it, right?

So tell her.

Call to action.

Thanks, Roo.

Ok-so…I’ve been stalking your blog,FB,Pinterest pages for awhile now. After reading this post, I must confess my girl crush on you. Don’t worry! I’m a happily married straight woman with three boys (that I would gladly have married off to your girls, but they’re a little older & that’s just creepy)!
Thank you for being so adorably you & making my day a little brighter!

LOVE your voice!! I don’t laugh out loud (literally) very often (except for Friends reruns) but I find myself looking like a fool in public, giggling at your posts– not because of the content (usually) but because of your writing. Figured this was the best post to comment on to show you my appreciation for the countless mood lifters. Keep it up!!

I love your blog…super super funny!! I’ve recommended it to everybody I know who has a Facebook . Recently on a trip to and back from Round Rock Texas, I read out loud just about every blog you had posted. It offered some much needed distracting humor. My uncle passed away and the trip was to go to his funeral. I rode up with my aunt, and naturally she was very emotional, we all were. When we started the three hour drive back, I logged on FB via my cell and read the blog you posted that day. She smiled, and I thought hmm do I dare read another?? I did… We chuckled, discussed your awesomeness and read some more. Thank you for inadvertently comforting us during that time. Love ya Roo!! Carry on G!

Hi Roo, I heard you speak at BloggyBootCamp in boston over a year ago – you were inspiring and entertaining – like your blog. Since attending I have been working full time and raising four kids and thinking about starting a blog… and last night I stopped thinking and started blogging. Like everything else in my life I expect it will carry me to places I didn’t anticipate but will enjoy. Thank you for this post – 8 ways to show a blogger you like her – very good advice and I need a lot of it! You are so generous and I am very grateful.

I have been reading your blogging and absolutely love the humor in it. I am a member of the National Association of Professional Women and belongs to the Beverly Hills Chapter. I was inducted to become a member because of the many business I have, the many hats I wear and the many faces of my character.
Check me out at my personal website as stated above: http://www.PreciousHilton.com and my Film Production and Distribution website which is: http://www.HiltonEntertainmentGroup.com.

I highly commend and congratulate you on the excellent job you are doing as a mom and a super, attractive blogger. You captured the attention and the heart of many of your fans and my hats out to you for doing a super blogging job.

I would like to become a blogger especially to promote my Film Production and distribution website but like yourself at the beginning, I am afraid to make that leap. I have been reading many blogging some I like and some does not attract all my attention. However, I don’t feel I will be well received and I don’t know where to start. What topic to start with and what to say to get the attention of the fans. I am on facebook and twitter. My personal website has Pinterest but I am not sure how it works. Maybe, you can explain a little more about it.

I hope to hear from you with some advice and I wish you and your family all the best for a Happy, successful and positive New Year 2013. I am very positive and know that this year will be very successful for me and everyone that is associated with me. I believe in the universe and feel my positive energy will influence other to make them positive and successful. As I always say, it is a mind set situation and if you have a positive mind set the result will be positive and encouraging.

Thank you and God bless.

Precious Hilton

This is a great article, and yes, I found you through Pinterest (ways to help a new mom). I’ll definitely be sticking around for a while (not in a crazy-stalker way though ;-)
