The End of the Year Push DietBet

neon-fresh-updated-disclosure

In August, we did a DietBet and 407 players lost 2,559 pounds. In light of this week’s post about end-of-the-year resolutions and some increased reader interest, we’re starting another one up. Wait, before I move on, this quick video explains a DietBet if you’re not familiar with it. It’s like Pinterest without the Oreo lasagna next to thinspiration or Twitter but fewer hashtags. (OK, not really either.)

But, but Christmas cookies, right? Someone left a super-smart comment and I think it applies here:

“I actually stopped making New Year’s resolutions because I realized that it just encouraged procrastination… Plus, I’ve noticed that people tend to binge on bad habits this time of year because they’re rationalizing that they’ll stop doing it in January.”

Yeah, that sounds exactly like me. All of the richest foods I can find from Thanksgiving Day on, and then New Year’s Day I’m miraculously on a no-sugar diet and I’m drinking green juice? My body doesn’t like that, and no one on this planet likes ME by the time January 4th rolls around. I plan on enjoying the holidays and still having, you know, mulled wine and cheese and dessert (mmmm) in moderation, but I think a DietBet will remind me that the goal is to enjoy myself, but not overindulge. I’ll schedule in some extra workouts (like… yoga.. I think), make sure to drink plenty of water, and go hard on salad on days I know I’ll be partying with rich food at nighttime.

I think the timing is going to work in our favor. We start next week, and just as motivation may start to wane, we’ll have the momentum of all of the New Year’s Resolutioners to propel us on through that final week.

Editing to add this email I received:
“Wanted to for reals thank you for the DietBet you hosted back in August. I had my second son on St. Patrick’s day (holla) this year and had no drive to even think about the gym, let alone try running or sticking with anything. But… when I saw your DietBet, I thought it might be the push that i need to get on track.  And it was – I did the whole IG thing and it kept me really motivated and counting calories actually worked (what!!!?!?!?) [Since then], the following amazing things have happened:

1) I lost 22 pounds.
2) I’m back down PAST my pre-baby weight and (get this) my wedding weight, too.
3) I have actually embraced leggings and skinny jeans for the first time in my life.
OMG OMG OMG!  Why haven’t I done this sooner???

So – long story short - thanks for the whole DietBet thing. I’m sure its a pain in the ass to host, but it has made a huge difference in my life and the size of my ass. :) – Melissa

This is JUST what I was thinking about. Yes I’ll indulge on Christmas day but there’s no need to gorge the whole month long.

True dat. I love Christmas cookies, but I can love one or two and not an entire platter, haha. :)

Quoting me and calling my past comment poignant? Yup, you just made my day.

My husband and I are celebrating Christmas with his relatives in Louisiana, and if it’s anything like last year, they will make so much food that you get full just from sampling everything. But good southern/cajun food, mmm, it’s worth every calorie. I’m behaving myself this month so I can fully enjoy that food marathon.

Hahahaha, you know, I wrote that line at 6 this morning, and I realized poignant was the wrong word. Can you tell I had like five articles due this morning? Super-smart totally fits, though. ;)

Can I come hang out with your husband’s relatives for Christmas?

Does the bet HAVE to be $30? Like, can you not set it lower? I’ve wanted to join the past couple of times you’ve done this, but I can’t afford that much on my tight budget, especially this month… I could do $10, though I understand that it doesn’t raise the pot very high…..

Hey Andrea, totally understand. They actually recommend for the pot to be a little higher ($35), because at that point people feel more invested. The success rate increases by 30% or so at a $35 entry.

That totally makes sense. The more money you put in, the more committed you are to win that money back! I will plan to save up for next time you host a dietbet. :)

Yayy!! This is exactly what I need I decided not to indulge (much) this holiday season and have lost 4lbs in the past two weeks, including Thanksgiving! I was anxious about all of the Christmas cookies ruining my progress, but this is exactly the motivation that I need to resist- thank you!
